I was just wondering if having more package files in game than sims 3 pack is the reason your game runs slow??

Short answer - Having more packages than sims3packs won't make a difference by itself, but having lots of either of them will! haha!

... As far as I know, packages are worst for slowing things down.
The general rule is that on a decent machine, you'll start to see serious lag when you've got 200+ packages.
To keep things running smoothly most people recommend keeping packages to under 100.

I've got an ok laptop, - just to give you something to compare against:
122 packages which is 249MB and 256 sims3packs which is 424MB- I'm only just starting to see a second or so of lag in CAS when loading up certain sections (like accessories)
Loading the game is pretty slow once it gets to the second loading screen, I haven't timed it but it's a good few mins.

So it totally depends on what your computer can handle!

But in short having bucketloads of cc (especially packages) will slow things down, mostly affecting game loading speed and CAS

You know, that is a great question Ina about the mods/sliders/hacks....because when I was in the process of fixing my game & had to re-install all those times, I noticed that when I put all my poses, mods, sliders, etc. in that my game was already going slower & I didn't even have 10 package or sims packs in game. And when I would take them all out when Isla was helping me.....then it would run fine. I also always wondered about what is a good number of these to have in-game?

Anyone can criticize...can YOU inspire? - unknown

Ina that's a good idea - hair files are massive, so getting rid of some should help quite a lot!

Well mods etc aren't big files, so in terms of loading them up it shouldn't have a big impact.

If we're including poses and individual sliders in 'mods' then out of my 122 packages, 50 are mods.
Only 4 are actual game mods though.
No intro, auto testingcheatsenabled, overwatch & error trap.

You can only have one core mod at a time (things like MasterController or Awesomemod)
- Having more than one will cause serious issues, other than that there's no limit on the amount as long as you don't have more than one mod affecting the same part of the game coding.
So as long as you don't have more than one mod doing the same thing, it's not really going to have a negative effect.

As for the whole game running faster without mods installed thing, it will run faster when there's nothing at all in the Mods folder because it can skip loading the packages altogether.
It's nothing to do with whether or not the packages are mods or cc items, it's just because there's nothing in there the game has to spend time loading :)
The fact that the game runs slower with small amounts of packages installed is more to do with what your machine can handle.

Basically, as long as you keep track of what you have, delete anything you don't want/need, and make sure you've got nothing corrupt/outdated/conflicting then you'll be running at the maximum speed your computer can deal with.
It's all about finding the balance between the amount of cc you have and the amount of time you're willing to wait!

Have you considered merging your package files? That will definitely improve performance if your problem is with the amount of files rather than system specs.

OOOPS! Sorry hun! I had a whole other paragraph on the end of that but I think I accidentally highlighted it all while I was deleting an extra smiley heart thingy haha!!

What I meant to put in there was:

You can use s3pe to merge package files and it should reduce general lag and game loading time because it drastically lowers the number of individual files the game has to load.

The best guide explaining how to do it is this one over at Club Crimsyn:
http://club-crimsyn.dreamwidth.org/28336.html#cutid1

It's pretty simple, but a basic tip would be to leave out any game mods or default replacements - they can be merged if you want, but when they need to be updated you'd have to re-merge the entire package.
Keeping them out makes it easier to keep track of what you have and stops any accidental game death inducing boo boos.

Also, I wouldn't recommend merging all your files into one massive package. It'll take just as long for the game to load a huge package as it would to load each one individually!
- I'd suggest having a few smaller merged packages.
If you've got a lot of one type of content for example, you could merge all of those into one package etc.

Aww haha it's no problem hun, you've actually reminded me that I was going to merge my files weeks ago and I completely forgot haha!

I'll merge them tomorrow and time my loading before and after, and report back so you have proof of the difference Very Happy

I merge all my packages. I went from a 13 minute load time to a 6 minute load time. I have have found that the many, many pose packs I have greatly slow down my game, so I just remove them unless I need to use them. I have found that Any Game Starter (http://www.modthesims.info/d/406814) is great for when I want to do different competitions. Example, if I'm doing Picture Perfect challenge over at TSS then I can install only the CC that I need for that room. Or I'm doing a advert comp for sunglasses, then I can only have a game with that CC. I love this program because it doesn't touch my main game files that has my legacy family.

Isla made some fantastic points. Backup all your files! That way if you ever decide you don't want to use a piece of CC anymore all you have to do is re-merge your files without that particular one. Also, don't convert and merge lots. Bad things happen afraid 1 Like Isla said, do small merged packages. I broke mine down into hair, makeup, tops, bottoms, outfits, etc. I also never merge my mods. Nraas updates so frequently and the files are tiny anyway.

Oh, and while I'm at it. If you haven't discovered the CAS world then I HIGHLY recommend you DL it. It's perfect for when you're working on a sim or lot. It loads super quick! You can find it here
